How the map decides

Three things put a business in the map results

Google says so in its own documentation, and every local tactic worth paying for moves one of the three.

01

Relevance

Does the profile and the site say, specifically, what this searcher needs? Categories, services, and pages that name the work. Most profiles are vague where they should be exact.

02

Distance

How far the searcher is from the address on file. You cannot move the shop, but every listing can agree on where it is, down to the suite number, and pages can exist for the places you actually go.

03

Prominence

How well known the business is: reviews and their recency, mentions on other sites, and the strength of the website behind the profile. This is the part that compounds, and the part most local SEO skips.

The long version, with the Utah address trap

Scope

What local SEO work includes

Seven kinds of work. The first three fix what is wrong today; the rest are what keep the position once it is won.

  • Google Business Profile

Categories, services, attributes, photos, posts, and the questions section, set up properly and kept current. The profile is the landing page most local customers see first.

  • Citations and consistency

Name, address, and phone identical on every directory that matters, duplicates removed, and the listings that quietly contradict you fixed.

  • Location and service pages

A page per place you serve and per service you offer, written from real work there. Not a template with the city swapped in, and no page for a city you do not serve.

  • Reviews

A cadence for asking, a system for responding, and the federal rules on incentives followed. Recency matters as much as the count.

  • Local content

Answers to the questions people in your market actually ask, the kind that earn mentions from neighbors and local press.

  • Tracking

Calls, direction requests, and form fills tied to their source, so the monthly scorecard can say what the profile produced.

  • Reporting

Search Console, Business Profile insights, and call data on one plain-language page each month.

Real work

A Sandy business, found from the map

The Doggy Den is a grooming and kennel-free boarding business in Sandy. We designed and built the site with the local layer in from the start, and keep it on a care plan. Google's own Business Profile panel, which retains six months of data, shows what the profile has been doing since March.

The site itself is shown on the SEO page. See the build

Where we work

Salt Lake City, the Wasatch Front, and the valleys either side

In person anywhere along the Wasatch Front and in the mountain communities east of it. Remotely across Utah and beyond. We do not publish a page for every city, because a page should describe work actually done there. If your town is not in this list, ask; we say yes more than we say no.

Who it fits

If customers choose you partly because of where you are

Service businesses

Trades, cleaners, movers, landscapers. You go to the customer, so the service area and the proof of work there carry the ranking.

Clinics and practices

Dental, medical, therapy, veterinary. Reviews, insurance and emergency queries, and a booking path that does not leak.

Shops and showrooms

Grooming, retail, studios, restaurants. The map is the storefront before the storefront; hours, photos, and directions decide the visit.

Multi-location groups

Each location found on its own terms under one brand, without the locations competing with each other.

Common questions

Local SEO questions, answered plainly

SEO is about being found for what you do. Local SEO is about being found for what you do near where the searcher is standing. It adds the Business Profile, the map results, citations, and reviews to the work. Most local businesses need both, in that order: the site first, then the local layer on top of it.

Only for places where you actually work, and only with real content: the services offered there, the jobs done there, the directions people ask about. A page for every suburb with the name swapped in is how sites get filtered out of the map, not into it.

Profile and citation fixes show in weeks. Map-pack movement for competitive terms takes a few months, and review and content work compound over a year. We set the expectation per market, because a suburb with three competitors and a downtown with thirty are different jobs.

Yes. Service-area businesses have their own profile rules and their own tactics. We set the service area honestly, hide the address where Google requires it, and build the pages that prove where you work.

Scoped after a short call, like every engagement. Local work is often the first monthly retainer a service business takes on, and it is sized to the number of locations and the competitiveness of the market rather than to a package.

Yes. The method is the same anywhere. What Utah businesses get in addition is a studio that knows the Wasatch Front market, the address quirks, and the competitors by name.

The right page

If this is not quite you

  • Your customers are not tied to a place

Then the local layer matters less than the foundation. The SEO page covers the whole discipline.

    SEO
  • The site needs work before the map does

A slow or thin site drags the profile down with it. Sometimes the local move is a better website.

    Websites
  • You want the whole picture first

The overview walks through every channel and which one a business like yours usually starts with.
